Guaiphenesin increases respiratory tract fluid, reduces the viscosity of tenacious secretions and acts as an expectorant. Terbutaline works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and widens airways. When the medicine is given in combination, it makes breathing easier and relives the discomfort.
