Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) describes an alteration in bone and mineral metabolism that occurs as a direct result of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The parathyroid gland is the central organ responsible for regulating these adaptive responses leading to secondary hyperparathyroidism.
